On May 4, a student on campus here at UCI scrawled “Students will revolt” in chalk on the sidewalk in front of Aldrich Hall, the building that houses administrative offices.
Chalk has been a symbol of defiance among student radicals at UCI since last year when a student was almost arrested by UCIPD for chalking anti-administrative epithets. Really childish stuff like “kill all the pigs”. The presence of the epithet, “students will revolt” in front of the admin building is itself a threat. This is our space, and my speech, and try and stop me.
And nobody has tried to stop this speech. Nobody has erased the warning, which I photographed today on my way home from class. More than that, nobody even looks at the message. The chalked warning seems an empty threat. Chancellor Drake & Co have called the radical’s bluff. No students are going to revolt, chalking is not an effective form of political speech.
